Took part in the Forest Riots of 1831 against the enclosures act at Parkend and Bream.  When caught he was sentenced to Life and deported to Australia, although pardoned in 1838 he never returned

Sir John Wyntour Lydney

Ardent royalist notorious and courageous.  Burnt Whitecross house in 1645 (which stood where Lydney Outdoor Swimming Pool is now) to stop the roundheads seizing the property.  He escaped and according to legend, jumped off Wyntours leap at Woodcroft, 200ft to river below and survived, fled to France and on his return built a new mansion at Lydney Park.  Later this was sold to the Bathurst family and is still around today

     
Capt Ralph Kerr 1891 to 1941, Newnham Went down with his ship HMS Hood when it was sunk by the Bismark.  He elected to stay at his station and perished along with 1415 seaman, the single biggest ship loss of the second world war
